The YMCA’s new design was a collaborative effort that evokes positive energy, flow and function using conceptual elements influenced by architects, throughout. The design consists of contrasting colors, not only from one room to the next, but also within the rooms. Brand colors in vibrant values are used on the walls, furnishings, floor patterns, and word graphics. The intention was to accentuate the flow of the space utilizing linear elements found within the entry hall, and runners, which create a sense of movement. This was also a creative solution to implement way-finding within the design. Multicolored rubbered flooring leads to the gymnasium, and subtle cues point to where to get tables.
Chip Hemingway of BMH Architects, introduced sky lights in the 2-story main lobby which flood the space with natural light. Custom linear light fixtures elevate your eyes upwards. Both are elements that contribute to the flow of positive energy and movement throughout. The children’s area references the aesthetic of nature with custom lily pad steppingstones, a jungle gym, and a reading nook. The reading nook comprises of a series of acoustic panels in tree leaf forms, suspended above for improved productivity and sound absorption.
